Next up, my 2008 Super Bowl predictions
Sarah Palin it is, then. I may have been wrong about that. Mister Pterodactyl: satisfaction guaranteed or your money back!
Guess I won't be winning that Kindle after all. Dang.

So far the Olympics seem to be going pretty well.
No major disasters to speak of. The Water Cube and the Bird’s Nest are awesome (from the outside, anyway). I wonder what the Chinese are going to do with them after the games. [Marketing idea: Olympic action figure playsets!]
Unlike some people, I always enjoy watching the Olympics.
But there’s one thing that bugs me. I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s not the pollution (wouldn’t want to offend the hosts). It’s not the pre-K gymnasts (shaddap!). It’s not the easy-to-obtain protest permits that nobody really wants, honest! I’m okay with all that stuff. I’m okay with China trying to pretend nobody notices, even while they’re telling everyone to shut up about it.
[Just go with it for the sake of discussion.]
Forget the controversies, the oppression, the spineless international community, et cetera, and focus on what's really important - not the politics, the politicians. The Chinese ones. Specifically, their names. Hasn't anyone else noticed? President Hu Jintao? Premier Wen Jiabao? Ladies and gentlemen, right there's an Abbott and Costello routine waiting to happen:
Hey, who’s the president of China?
Hu’s the president of China.
That’s what I’m asking you. Who’s the president of China?
Yes? What, yes?
Hu is the president of China.
I’m asking YOU who’s the president of China.
I’m TELLING you, Hu’s the president of China.
YOU’RE NOT TELLING ME ANYTHING. [Grumble, sigh] Okay, look: does China have a president?
Does the president of China have a name?
Do you know the name of the president of China?
Will you tell me the name of the president of China?
No, Wen’s the prime minister.
It writes itself, people. And if the Chinese had a Wat, Wer, Wy, and Hau, it'd be even funnier.

So Favre, So Good
End of first quarter. Aaron Rodgers looks pretty good. So does the rest of the team. I'd be more impressed, but the Bengals apparently think the game is two-hand touch.

It's a supervillain, it's a love triangle...
...it's a rock opera?
Found at Ace (I only go there for the weird shit like this). Written by Joss Whedon, starring Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion. Enjoy.

Watching a preseason game tonight...
Saints at Cards. ESPN. The commentators just announced a new record for one-day sales of a single player's game jersey. Guess whose?
A month or so ago, when the story got out that Favre had contacted the team about coming back, and he told reporters that it was 'just a rumor,' I thought sure, we're going to be hearing rumors like that for a long time. Probably well into the '08 season.
When I was watching that press conference last spring, I thought: this guy's gonna get antsy. I think a lot of professional athletes face it - even if they retire willingly, the summer rolls along and training camp starts getting close and they start feeling like they're supposed to be somewhere. I think that's what happened with Favre. He was tired and he'd been hearing the 'will he or won't he' for so long that finally (just a couple months after the season ended) he decided he didn't want to go through all that again. But then when he was facing the rest of his life with no football...
I haven't paid a ton of attention to the ongoing details. I just hope for a happy ending, whatever that is. And I choose to remember the good times. Every time Favre threw his arms up and ran to the end zone? Priceless. That's my iconic image of him. The head butts with the linemen. the Lambeau Leap (which he never did, but I associate it with him). Et cetera.
And I think I may get me one of those jerseys.
